Fetch FAQ
What is Fetch?
Fetch is an FTP client for the MacOS.
What versions of MacOS does it work with?
It should run under any modern MacOS
Is there a Windows version?
No. We recommend WS_FTP or Coffecup Free FTP for Windows.
Do I need to contact you before I send a file?
Yes, so we know to look for your file. The first time you are going to send, you will need to obtain a username, password, and starting directory. We will supply these. For future transfers, you will use the same username info.
Contact: Electronic Prepress (Paul, Fawad, Mary, or Steve)
Phone: (510) 489-6543 - ask for Electronic Prepress
Email: prepress@fricke-parks.com
Can I use anonymous FTP?
No. You can, however, log into the server and use the “press” folder. The info for this is:
Host: ftp.fricke-parks.com
User ID: press
Password:***** (call for this)
Directory: *leave blank*
In Fetch, it looks like this:

When Fetch starts up, you will need to enter the new connection information exactly as you see above, only with the real password, of course.
To save these settings for next time, first connect to our server. Then, go to the Customize menu in Fetch and select New Shortcut... You will notice that the current connection info is typed in, except that the password is missing, and the name of the shortcut is highlighted. You may customize the name to whatever you want and retype the password in order to store it.
Once this is done, you can make FP Press the default connection by going to Preferences in the Customize menu and selecting the Shortcut name from the pop-up menu. Now our site's shortcut will be open whenever you launch Fetch or type Command-N for a new connection.
The main screen for Fetch looks like this:

The window on the left displays the contents of the anonymous folder on our FTP server. The “htaccess” file is for administrative use, so ignore it. This is a public space, so you may see other files here as well. Ignore them.
To send a file, click the Put File... button. Navigate to and select your file in the normal manner, then:

In the above example, the file FTPLogIn.tiff.bin is going to be sent to our server. The Format should be MacBinary II. Hit OK.

In the above example, a file called web.stuff.sit is being sent to the server.
How do I know the file is sent?
The circle graph to the right will complete.
I can't connect... what now?
Problems usually come from miss-typed information. The username or password is frequently misspelled, and sometimes the hyphen is left out of Fricke-Parks.
If you are using a dial-up modem, you may need to connect first, then run Fetch. Just launch your web browser and connect like you normally would. Then launch Fetch.
It is also possible that your network uses a Firewall, or other network security device. Whoever administers your Firewall should be able to configure it to allow FTP.
Should I compress my files before sending?
Yes, this will speed up the transfer greatly. Stuffit is a handy utility for this.
Are there certain restrictions on filenames of my files?
Yes. Do not use symbols or spaces in file names.
I have hundreds of files in my project... do I have to rename them all if I used spaces?
No. Compress the files into an archive, and make sure the archive name contains no symbols or spaces. It is a good idea to adopt a naming convention that does not use symbols and spaces for other reasons, however. Bad characters can cause problems with some servers, software, and RIPS.
